Objectives
- To share key lessons learned and challenges encountered during the transition process.
- To understand the end-to-end process of Jakarta’s transition to electric buses, from planning and pilot phases to large-scale deployment.
- To explore how electric bus projects can generate value through carbon projects, including emission reductions, carbon credit potential, and related revenue streams.
- To share practical lessons and challenges in linking electric mobility initiatives with carbon market mechanisms.
Background
The urban transport sector is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in large cities with rapid population growth across Southeast Asia. As mobility demand increases, cities are required to provide public transport systems that are efficient, affordable, and low-emission.
Jakarta has taken strategic steps to decarbonize its transport sector through the deployment of electric buses within its public transport system. This transition involves a range of complex considerations, including infrastructure readiness, regulatory frameworks, financing mechanisms, and operational capacity.
This workshop aims to examine the lessons learned from Jakarta’s electric bus transition by highlighting both achievements and challenges. Drawing on firsthand experience from PT Transportasi Jakarta, the session is expected to provide practical references for policymakers, businesses, and investors involved in sustainable urban transport development.
