Objectives
This workshop is part of the MRV series, facilitated by Agustan Agustan, a Senior Researcher from BRIN, aims to introduce and deepen participants’ understanding of how remote sensing can be applied to support MRV — including in carbon projects, Nature-Based Solutions, and other relevant contexts. It also aims to strengthen foundational technical capacity in the integrated use of radar and optical data.Â
Background
Remote sensing has advanced rapidly in recent decades, with better data availability, resolution, sensor variety, and analysis methods. Initially used for basic mapping like land cover classification, it now supports strategic areas such as climate action, carbon accounting, and biomass estimation—especially with the integration of AI and satellite technology.
It plays a key role in Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), aiding in site identification (e.g., degraded lands, watersheds, coastal zones) and monitoring restoration efforts like reforestation and agroforestry. Tools like NDVI and radar help track vegetation health and land cover change over time.
Combining radar and optical data strengthens monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems—especially for estimating above-ground biomass, which is critical for calculating carbon storage in ecosystems.
