As countries advance the implementation of their climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, international cooperation is becoming an increasingly vital component of achieving ambitious and cost-effective mitigation outcomes. Article 6 of the Paris Agreement provides a framework for such cooperation, enabling countries to work together through the transfer of mitigation outcomes, crediting mechanisms, and broader financing strategies that support both climate and sustainable development goals.

This e-learning course is designed specifically for government officials and policymakers to build a foundational and practical understanding of Article 6 and its key components. The course covers the institutional and technical aspects of cooperative approaches and crediting mechanisms, while offering strategic guidance on national readiness and long-term financing.

Through six thematic units, the course guides learners from the core principles of the Paris Agreement to the operationalization of cooperative approaches under Article 6.2 and the centralized crediting mechanism under Article 6.4. It also explores the full activity cycle, approval and authorization processes, and the infrastructure needed to track and report Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs). Special attention is given to the development of national participation strategies, risk mitigation (including overselling), and benefit-sharing mechanisms.

Finally, the course introduces a practical decision-support tool—the Article 6 Selection Criteria Toolkit—to help countries align Article 6 activities with long-term NDC implementation and SDG financing objectives.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to engage meaningfully in Article 6 processes, assess national readiness, and contribute to the design of robust and transparent international cooperation frameworks that support national climate and development priorities.
