Objectives
This workshop session facilitated by Marc Peeters, a Partner in Bambu Nusa Verde, aims to explore and promote the role of bamboo as a nature-based solution that can contribute meaningfully to both carbon credit generation and community resilience. It will bring together stakeholders from government, research institutions, civil society, and the private sector to share knowledge, assess opportunities, and identify pathways for integrating bamboo into broader climate and development agendas.
Background
Nature-based solutions are gaining attention for climate mitigation, with the forestry sector playing a key role. Among various commodities, bamboo stands out for its ability to reduce emissions while also supporting local livelihoods and restoring ecosystems.
Though often mistaken for a tree, bamboo is a fast-growing grass with over 1,250 species found in tropical and subtropical areas. Its rapid growth and ability to thrive on degraded land make it ideal for reforestation and carbon capture. Research from Universitas Gadjah Mada shows bamboo can absorb up to 17 tons of carbon per hectare per year and produce 35% more oxygen than trees.
In addition to its environmental benefits, bamboo offers economic value. Integrated into nature-based solution (NbS) frameworks, it can support local communities through skills training, bamboo-based industries, and participation in carbon markets. This combination of climate and social benefits makes bamboo a strong candidate for both voluntary and compliance carbon market strategies.
