ObjectivesÂ
This workshop will explore the untapped potential of seagrass ecosystems in Indonesia, providing a discussion of innovative approaches, share best practices, and identify actionable pathways to optimize blue carbon benefits.Â
Background
Seagrass ecosystems are among the planet’s most effective natural carbon sinks, capturing CO2 through photosynthesis and storing organic carbon in their soils for millennia. Experts have determined that seagrass carbon sequestration is 35 times more efficient per unit area than that of tropical rainforests. However, seagrass ecosystems are under threat and are experiencing widespread die-offs. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), seagrasses are disappearing globally at rates comparable to those of coral reefs and tropical rainforests, with an annual loss of up to 7% of their area.
In Indonesia, seagrasses account for 11.5% of the world’s seagrass meadows, a strategic asset for the government to  target for its carbon storage capabilities. Seagrass beds are found throughout the archipelago, from Sumatra to Papua and from North Sulawesi to the southern Nusa Tenggara. With this potential, seagrasses present a promising solution for Indonesia’s carbon sink strategy, although there are still uncertainties about the full extent of their reach.
