Emission reduction activity in waste management and Article 6 potential. A case study from Yogyakarta

Thursday, 20 March, 2025 @ 09:00 - 12:00 WIB

Free

Objectives

This workshop aims to provide insights and share experiences in managing the waste sector within the carbon market in Indonesia.

Background

Waste is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing 1,580 billion tonnes of COâ‚‚ equivalent (COâ‚‚e), which accounts for 3.2% of total global COâ‚‚ emissions. In Indonesia, in 2019, major urban centres produced up to 8 million tonnes of waste per day. While emissions from the waste sector are relatively small compared to other sectors, it is a major contributor to methane (CHâ‚„) and nitrous oxide (Nâ‚‚O) emissions. As a result, waste management and recycling initiatives have increasingly become a focus, including in both national and international carbon pricing mechanisms.

As the population grows, especially in major cities such as Yogyakarta, concerns about the waste sector have intensified. In some areas, landfills have been permanently closed due to capacity limitations, making it difficult to accommodate and process waste effectively. ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability has been working on this issue for years alongside local governments, from initial processes to collaborative efforts aimed at integrating waste management into the carbon market.
