Objectives
This workshop aims to highlight the importance of FPIC and share the speaker’s experience in managing and implementing this principle.
Background
Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a critical principle and legal norm designed to safeguard the collective rights of indigenous peoples, particularly their right to self-determination, consultation, and participation in decisions that directly affect their lands, resources, and communities. At its core, FPIC ensures that indigenous peoples are actively involved in the design, implementation, and decision-making processes of any projects that may impact them, especially concerning lands and resources. Given its importance, FPIC has become an internationally recognized mandate, specifically in the context of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiatives. High-quality carbon projects also recognize and integrate FPIC as one of key components. This creates a foundation for meaningful partnerships with local and indigenous communities, fostering a lasting legacy of respect and collaboration.
