Objectives
This workshop aims to explore the critical role of blue carbon in contributing to Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) while analyzing strategies to leverage its full market potential.
Background
Since launching in August 2024, the inFUSE Accelerator has brought together more than 170 members dedicated to participating in, and accelerating the growth, of Indonesia’s carbon market ecosystem. With the new year , inFUSE is launching a new season as part of Neyen’s ongoing commitment to advancing carbon market development. To kick off this season, we will recap what we learn from season 1 and start by focusing on blue carbon in the voluntary carbon market. The voluntary carbon market has witnessed a significant rise in both demand and prices for blue carbon credits. According to OPIS, as of March 2023, the average price for Blue Carbon V23 Credits was $33.01/Mt, considerably higher than the $11.71/Mt average for REDD+ V23 Credits. This trend is estimated to continue, as blue carbon credits demonstrate a unique potential for carbon sequestration alongside strong social and ecological co-benefits.
As an archipelagic nation with extensive coastal areas, Indonesia holds 23% of the world’s mangrove ecosystems—one of the most effective in removing greenhouse gases (GHG) from the atmosphere. Recognizing this importance, Indonesia’s Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) highlights blue carbon ecosystems as one of crucial components in achieving the country’s new GHG emission reduction targets: 31.89% unconditional and 43.20% conditional reduction. To seize this opportunity, Indonesia must fully optimize its blue carbon potential, not only to meet its NDC commitments but also to position itself as a leader in the global carbon market.
