Unlocking Indonesia’s Peatlands: Pathways to Carbon Reduction and Sustainable Restoration

Thursday, 10 July, 2025 @ 09:00 - 12:00 WIB

Free

Objectives

This workshop session facilitated by Imam Basuki, a Senior Wetland Specialist from Wildlife Works Indonesia, seeks a shared understanding of the strategic importance of peatlands for climate mitigation, insights into project design and implementation challenges, and actionable recommendations to support the advancement of carbon crediting frameworks at both voluntary and regulated levels.

Background

Indonesia’s 13.4 million hectares of peatlands represent one of the world’s largest carbon sinks, playing a vital role in global climate regulation. However, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by deforestation, drainage, land conversion, and frequent fires. Sustainable management and restoration of peatlands offer a significant opportunity for Indonesia to support global climate mitigation efforts through nature-based solutions, particularly by enhancing carbon storage and reducing emissions.

This workshop will delve into the current condition of Indonesia’s peatlands and their role in long-term carbon reduction. It will explore ongoing and planned carbon projects, challenges in voluntary and domestic carbon markets, and the implementation of strategies like REDD+, large-scale ecosystem restoration, and fire prevention. Participants will also discuss technical aspects such as carbon sink rates, carbon removal accounting, and crediting standards within both international and national contexts.
