SUMMARY:Biodigester Case Study: Opportunities and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Objectives\nThis workshop will delve into case studies of biodigester projects by Biru Karbon Nusantara\, shedding light on both the opportunities and challenges encountered in their development over the past few years. \nBackground\nIn the heart of Indonesia’s rural communities\, life revolves around the simplicity of nature. Families often collect tree branches from nearby wooded areas\, a practice that has long provided an accessible and almost cost-free source of fuel. For those who purchase wood\, the cost is minimal\, reinforcing its appeal as a primary energy source. However\, this accessibility has also created a stagnant market for better cooking solutions. With little consumer demand for innovation\, local producers stick to manufacturing basic biomass cookstoves\, often with poor quality control. \nThis reliance on traditional methods comes at a cost. In 2014\, nearly 24 million of Indonesia’s 60 million households still relied on biomass\, such as firewood\, for cooking. These traditional stoves fill homes with smoke\, turning kitchens into hazardous spaces. The impact is staggering—indoor air pollution from these stoves is linked to approximately 165\,000 premature deaths each year\, particularly affecting women and children who spend more time near the stoves. \nBut amidst these challenges lies an opportunity for transformation. Biogas\, a clean and sustainable energy source\, has the potential to revolutionize rural livelihoods. By converting livestock manure into energy\, biogas not only provides a healthier and more efficient cooking solution but also addresses pressing environmental concerns. This technology prevents harmful methane emissions from manure and reduces dependence on firewood or fossil fuels for cooking. It offers rural families not just a cleaner kitchen but also a chance to improve their economic well-being and contribute to combating climate change. \nSpeakers\nChabi Batur Romzini\, Director\, PT Biru Karbon Nusantara \nSarfina Adani\, Consultant\, Neyen \nAgenda\n09.00 – 09.30 Registration and coffee\n09.30 – 09.35 Welcoming remarks\, Sarfina Adani\, Neyen\n09.35 – 09.50 Topic introduction\, Sarfina Adani\, Neyen\n10.00 – 10.30 Biodigester Case Study: Opportunities and Challenges\, Chabi Batur Romzini\, PT Biru Karbon Nusantara\n10.30 – 11.15 Q&A\n11.15 – 11.20 Closing and photo session\n11.20 – 12.00 Networking session \nWhen and where?\n29th November\, 09:00 – 12:00 WIB \nWeWork Revenue Tower – 25th Floor\, Meeting Room 25A \nPlease note\, this is an in-person only event. \nWho should attend?\nThis workshop is intended for Project Developers based in Indonesia\, government officials\, CSOs\, and representatives of industry who are interested in participating in the carbon market or represent local communities with an interest in the Indonesian Carbon Market.
