SUMMARY:Case Study: The importance of biodiversity in the Rimba Raya Project
DESCRIPTION:Objectives\nThis workshop will explore how biodiversity aspects are identified and measured as a critical component of the Rimba Raya Project. \nBackground\nBiodiversity plays an essential role in the health and long-term sustainability of ecosystems that store carbon. Healthy\, biodiverse forests have a higher resilience to pests\, diseases\, and climate stressors\, making them more effective carbon sinks in the long run. In land management projects\, projects to sequester carbon emissions may prioritize carbon credit outcomes at the expense of biodiversity. Studies show that projects avoiding deforestation with a focus purely on maximizing carbon credits produce lower biodiversity benefits than the ones prioritizing biodiversity. Similarly\, reforestation efforts that emphasize carbon through factors like planting location and species selection may also lead to detrimental effects\, such as the spread of invasive species. \nGiven this\, integrating biodiversity has become a key consideration in many carbon certification standards. For example\, the Climate\, Community\, and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards are one such framework for evaluating biodiversity. This includes assessing the vulnerability of species and recognition that the population that may be irreplaceable\, ensuring that biodiversity is preserved alongside carbon sequestration goals. \nGuest speaker\nFirnandez Ngariswara V.S\, Deputy Head of Biodiversity\, Dassa Corp.
