SUMMARY:Taking Blue Carbon beyond NDCs: Expanding the impact
DESCRIPTION:Objectives \nThis workshop aims to explore the critical role of blue carbon in contributing to Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) while analyzing strategies to leverage its full market potential. \nBackground \nSince launching in August 2024\, the inFUSE Accelerator has brought together more than 170 members dedicated to participating in\, and accelerating the growth\, of Indonesia’s carbon market ecosystem. With the new year \, inFUSE is launching a new season as part of Neyen’s ongoing commitment to advancing carbon market development. To kick off this season\, we will recap what we learn from season 1 and start by focusing on blue carbon in the voluntary carbon market. The voluntary carbon market has witnessed a significant rise in both demand and prices for blue carbon credits. According to OPIS\, as of March 2023\, the average price for Blue Carbon V23 Credits was $33.01/Mt\, considerably higher than the $11.71/Mt average for REDD+ V23 Credits. This trend is estimated to continue\, as blue carbon credits demonstrate a unique potential for carbon sequestration alongside strong social and ecological co-benefits. \nAs an archipelagic nation with extensive coastal areas\, Indonesia holds 23% of the world’s mangrove ecosystems—one of the most effective in removing greenhouse gases (GHG) from the atmosphere. Recognizing this importance\, Indonesia’s Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) highlights blue carbon ecosystems as one of crucial components in achieving the country’s new GHG emission reduction targets:  31.89% unconditional and 43.20% conditional reduction. To seize this opportunity\, Indonesia must fully optimize its blue carbon potential\, not only to meet its NDC commitments but also to position itself as a leader in the global carbon market. \nSpeakers\nAndreas A Hutahaean\, Principal Consultant\, Blue Carbon & AFOLU\, Neyen Consulting \nJeremy Buhain\, Consultant\, Neyen Consulting \nAgenda\n09.00 – 09.30 Registration and coffee\n09.30 – 09.35 Welcoming remarks\, Jeremy Buhain\, Neyen\n09.35 – 09.50 inFUSE Season 1 recap\, Jeremy Buhain\, Neyen\n09.50 – 10.35 Taking Blue Carbon beyond NDCs\, Andreas A Hutahaean\, Neyen\n10.35 – 11.05 Discussion session (Q&A)\n11.05 – 11.20 Closing and photo session\n11.20 – 12.00 Networking session \nWhen and where?\n16th January\, 09:00 – 12:00 WIB \nWe-work Noble House Kuningan. Meeting room 29D\, access via Floor 30. \nPlease note\, this is an in-person only event. \nWho should attend?\nThis workshop is intended for private sector Project Developers based in Indonesia\, government officials\, NGOs\, and CSOs who are interested in participating in the carbon market or represent local communities with an interest in the Indonesian Carbon Market.

SUMMARY:Blue Carbon Value of Seagrass Meadows: Exploring the carbon market opportunity.
DESCRIPTION:Objectives  \nThis workshop will explore the untapped potential of seagrass ecosystems in Indonesia\, providing a discussion of innovative approaches\, share best practices\, and identify actionable pathways to optimize blue carbon benefits.  \nBackground \nSeagrass ecosystems are among the planet’s most effective natural carbon sinks\, capturing CO2 through photosynthesis and storing organic carbon in their soils for millennia. Experts have determined that seagrass carbon sequestration is 35 times more efficient per unit area than that of tropical rainforests. However\, seagrass ecosystems are under threat and are experiencing widespread die-offs. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)\, seagrasses are disappearing globally at rates comparable to those of coral reefs and tropical rainforests\, with an annual loss of up to 7% of their area. \nIn Indonesia\, seagrasses account for 11.5% of the world’s seagrass meadows\, a strategic asset for the government to  target for its carbon storage capabilities. Seagrass beds are found throughout the archipelago\, from Sumatra to Papua and from North Sulawesi to the southern Nusa Tenggara. With this potential\, seagrasses present a promising solution for Indonesia’s carbon sink strategy\, although there are still uncertainties about the full extent of their reach. \nSpeakers\nYusmiana Puspitaningsih Rahayu\, Research Center for Conservation of Marine and Inland Water Resources\, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) \nAndreas A.
