SUMMARY:From CSR to longer term Carbon Projects: Opportunities and benefits
DESCRIPTION:Objectives\nThis workshop will showcase Carbon Ethics’ expertise\, emphasizing the key differences between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs and carbon projects. It will explore their unique goals\, approaches and impacts\, highlighting the opportunities and benefits of transitioning from CSR initiatives to long-term carbon projects. \nBackground\nIndonesia holds for 70% of the world’s carbon credits from forests\, mangroves\, peatlands\, and seagrasses. This includes 3.31 million hectares of mangroves\, 7.5 million hectares of peatlands\, and 125.9 million hectares of tropical rainforests. To take this leadership position even further\, delivering premium or high-quality blue carbon is a critical consideration. Activities to recover and rehabilitate the coastal ecosystem through mangrove\, seagrass\, and peatland planting\, while simultaneously providing community benefits are the key element to these projects. \nAt the same time\, similar but distinct activities have been carried out under CSR programs in Indonesia. Mangrove rehabilitation\, for instance\, is a popular initiative. These CSR commitments are mandatory for state-owned enterprises and certain corporations under Law No. 40/2007 and Corporate Law Article 74\, which require companies to address social and environmental issues within their operational areas. Common CSR activities include environmental sustainability efforts\, community development\, education\, improving basic living standards\, and ensuring health and safety. \nThis workshop will explore these approaches and look at the opportunities and benefits for public and private entities to back longer-term carbon projects to maximize their impact. \nGuest Speaker\nAmadea Cintantya\, Business Manager\, CarbonEthics \nAgenda\n09.00 – 09.30 Registration and coffee\n09.30 – 09.35 Welcoming remarks\, Sarfina Adani\, Neyen\n09.35 – 09.50 Blue Carbon Introduction\, Sarfina Adani\, Neyen \nWORKSHOP\n09.50 – 10.35 From CSR to longer term Carbon Projects: Opportunities and benefits\, Amadea Cintantya\, CarbonEthics\n10.35 – 11.05 Q&A\n11.05 – 11.20 Closing and photo session\n11.20 – 12.00 Networking session \nWhen and where?\n13th February\, 09:00 – 12:00 WIB \nWeWork Revenue Tower – 25th Floor\, Meeting Room 25A \nPlease note\, this is an in-person only event. \nWho should attend?\nThis workshop is designed for the private sector\, government officials\, NGOs\, research institutions/universities and intergovernmental organizations that are committed to advancing sustainability initiatives.

SUMMARY:The role of carbon offsets in regulated carbon pricing instruments. A key driver for carbon projects development.
DESCRIPTION:Objectives\nThis workshop will discuss the use of carbon credits to comply with targets under Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS)\, carbon taxes and other regulated mechanisms like CORSIA in the aviation sector. Allowing the use of carbon credits in a compliance scheme creates demand that is a critical driver to incentivize the development of carbon projects. It will present the impact of carbon credits on price and liquidity in ETS\, and lessons learned in different regions / countries around the world. \nBackground\nCompliance mechanisms such as Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS) operate on a cap-and-trade principle\, where a regulatory body sets a limit (cap) on total emissions\, and companies can trade allowances (permits to emit) to meet their compliance obligations. An ETS often includes mechanisms that offer flexibility for companies to comply with their targets. These mechanisms including the possibility to borrow allowances from a future trading period\, bank allowances for use in a future trading period\, or allow for the use of carbon credits from sectors outside the compliance scheme. \nUnlike Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS)\, carbon tax schemes impose a direct price on carbon emissions\, requiring companies to pay for each ton of CO₂ they emit. Singapore is an example where international carbon credits are used for compliance with a carbon tax. Colombia and South Africa allow domestic carbon credits. \nCORSIA\, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation\, is foreseen as a key driver for carbon credits demand in the coming years. \nThis workshop will delve into how allowing the use of carbon credits incentivize companies to reduce emissions at the lowest cost while providing much-needed liquidity for project developers to develop carbon projects\, thus boosting nature-based solutions and technological carbon removal solutions. \nSpeakers\nMiguel Rescalvo\, Managing Partner\, Neyen Consulting \nAndreas A. SUMMARY:Case Study: The importance of biodiversity in the Rimba Raya Project
DESCRIPTION:Objectives\nThis workshop will explore how biodiversity aspects are identified and measured as a critical component of the Rimba Raya Project. \nBackground\nBiodiversity plays an essential role in the health and long-term sustainability of ecosystems that store carbon. Healthy\, biodiverse forests have a higher resilience to pests\, diseases\, and climate stressors\, making them more effective carbon sinks in the long run. In land management projects\, projects to sequester carbon emissions may prioritize carbon credit outcomes at the expense of biodiversity. Studies show that projects avoiding deforestation with a focus purely on maximizing carbon credits produce lower biodiversity benefits than the ones prioritizing biodiversity. Similarly\, reforestation efforts that emphasize carbon through factors like planting location and species selection may also lead to detrimental effects\, such as the spread of invasive species. \nGiven this\, integrating biodiversity has become a key consideration in many carbon certification standards. For example\, the Climate\, Community\, and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards are one such framework for evaluating biodiversity. This includes assessing the vulnerability of species and recognition that the population that may be irreplaceable\, ensuring that biodiversity is preserved alongside carbon sequestration goals. \nGuest speaker\nFirnandez Ngariswara V.S\, Deputy Head of Biodiversity\, Dassa Corp.
